Gastonia, North Carolina — Newly released body cam footage shows the moments before, during and after a Gastonia police officer shot a woman in July.

Rookie officer Stephen Whisnant was responding to a noise complaint on Gray Street on July 8 when he encountered Jarvis Lynn in the home’s front yard. Footage from the incident shows Lynn running from Whisnant. The officer asks to see Lynn’s hands and he runs inside through the home’s back door.

Whisnant’s body camera captures the moments that happened next, when the officer fired through the door and struck Brittany Lynn in the breast. “He wouldn’t show me his hands. Oh (expletive),” Whisnant said to a fellow officer. “He went in the door and my (expletive) finger slipped. Oh (expletive).”

Brittany Lynn was treated and released from the hospital hours after the shooting. Her family called for Whisnant to be fired.

Whisnant remains on duty. He was reinstated Nov. 21 after more than four months on administrative leave.

District Attorney Locke Bell concluded the shooting was an accident and refused to press criminal charges against the officer, who had only been employed a few months at the time of the incident.

Jarvis Lynn faces pending charges of possession of a firearm by a felon.
