Nice Budget Ultrabook - Beware NO USB Charger+
Just got my Asus Zenbook ux330(3 days) and its a really nice ultra book with a few quirks, but for this price i cannot complain too much. This is the second budget ultrabook i've purchased in a year. Last year i got the Acer S13 for my wife, so i will do a little bit of comparison as well. This laptop is drop dead gorgeous!!! The metal body is just a beauty, the black keyboard against the metal looks amazing and gives it a premium look; a macbook type feel. Really nice. The screen opens very easily with one hand, allowing the body to stay flat. That is really nice BUT for me it feels a bit flimsy...i think it is because i am accustomed to have to open laptops with both hands. The Acer S13 screen hinge is very very firm and must be opened with two hands, so i am hoping that this is how the laptop was designed and its not really weak, and its a case of muscle memory. I think i have heard persons complain about the hinges on some other reviews but lets see how it does in the future. The laptop comes with a mini HDMI port which is nice, but i think i prefer the regular size HDMI port because it is bigger and more secure. I am using this laptop as my primary machine and have it connected to an external monitor almost 100% of the time. So i keep the cable very still. I prefer the Acer with the regular size HDMI port. While typing the keyboard flexes but its not a deal breaker. The ASUS splash screen during boot up is somewhat annoying. I can say that after nearly one year of using the ACER it boots up faster than this brand new laptop. The Acer still loads in about 4-5 seconds, this is like 7 seconds, again not a huge issue. This laptop has the 7th gen intel and a finger print reader which the Acer doesn't have. The speakers seem to play softly even though it is branded as Harmon Kardon so i dont know whats that all about. So generally i am impressed. As soon as i get some money and can sell this i really want a dell XPS 13, but for now i think this is a really good laptop for this price range. Its really hard to choose between this and the Acer, the other thing i like about this vs the Acer is the metal body. The Acer is black and the case has started to strip really badly after one year of use. I bought a vinyl cover for it. I dont think that will happen to this Asus because its brushed metal which feels really cool to touch by the way. I'll update this review as i use this laptop a little longer. P.S. the track pad feels really good...but the the delete button is just beside the power button..that is very weird and even though I haven't accidentally hit the power button and do see it happening in the future, I checked the Acer and they have it in the same location and my wife says it hasn't been a problem for her.UPDATE - One week later and i just realized the laptop does not come with the USB charger+ feature allowing it to charge devices while turned off, this is deceptive marketing because it says that the laptop comes with that feature...again this is standard with the Acer s13, apart from the finger print reader and the look of the laptop, functionally the Acer s13 is a better machine and i would recommend it over this. Again this is not a deal breaker, so i am still giving it the 4 stars but it feels bad when you have been deceived. If i lived in the US i would consider sending it back for one that comes with the charge+ Everything else working nicely
    Thank you for your feedback

The ZenBook is very light, and feels solidly built with clean lines and precise fit. It's very quiet, except when the CPU is under heavy load and even then the cooling fan is remarkably quiet. The LCD display uses the same IPS technology that Apple laptops, tablets, and smartphones use, so you have good color and contrast at a wide viewing angle. The back light on the LCD isn't as bright as I would like, even at full brightness, but I did notice that when you're in a well lit room it adjusts its brightness quite a bit to remain viewable, so this isn't a showstopper by any means.

The keyboard is comfortable, and while some laptops have separate numeric keypads, I've found that I don't miss it one bit here. I love the lighted keys, especially with the bright white LEDs that they use for illumination.

The power supply is very small and lightweight. The power connector has an elbow so that the cord projects toward the back of the laptop while plugged in. Frankly, the connector and the jack seem cheap and flimsy compared to other laptops, but this computer is such a power miser that it really doesn't need anything heavy-duty to transfer power. You can charge up the battery in the span of a couple hours, and unless you're, say, rendering a large MPEG-4 movie file or MPEG-3 audio recording--anything computationally intensive--you will get hours and hours of use out of a single charge. The manufacturer claims 12 hours of use, but my experience has been closer to 9-10 hours, which is darn impressive.

The Windows 10 installation isn't saddled with bloatware and runs very well and is super responsive. Asus chose good default settings to ensure your security within Windows, and it relies on Windows Defender for antivirus and malware protection. If you're the type of person who tends to visit the same websites each day this is almost a non-issue. I download software on occasion and Defender has alerted me to malware the few times I've downloaded something that was infected. Boot time is crazy fast, on the order of 4-5 seconds, as is becoming the norm now with SSDs.

After toting around a 15" gaming laptop for a couple weeks, I barely notice the weight of this ultrabook in my backpack. It's amazingly light and compact, and as I said earlier, even the power supply is noticeably lighter than most laptop power supplies.

I'm very pleased with this ultrabook and think it will meet most people's needs for general computing, and even some more compute-intensive tasks, including audio compression and transcoding, and some light video editing and rendering.

UPDATE 10/4/2017 - The issue I had with the display brightness is due to the ambient light sensor. To my surprise, there is a key sequence that will display the ambient light sensor and, boy, can this screen get bright! It was right there in front of me the whole time, an icon on top of the A key--pressing FN+A toggles the ambient light sensor on/off, and I'm pleased to say that, if you want this display to be bright you certainly can do so.

    Style: 256GB SSDVerified Purchase
    Here's my initial impression.

I bought this without the almost obsessive research I usually do when buying major electronics. Why? Well, I was two weeks out from my first finals of law school, and my laptop died. I was stupid and bought a second-hand
Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro  off a recently-graduated MBA student. The laptop was less than a year old, so I thought it was a solid decision, considering that I didn't want to shell out $500+ for a new laptop when I had built a PC the summer before and went way over budget (as you do, when building PCs).

Yeah, so the thing bricked. Wouldn't post. The motherboard is dead, and the thing is 15 months old and out of warranty. I was freaking out.

So I had heard that Asus made a Macbook Air knock-off that people like, and I couldn't afford to buy an actual Mac (also, I have a slavish loyalty to PC, sorrynotsorry). I needed a working laptop pretty much yesterday, so I made a split-second $800 decision that I thought I would regret.

    I really, really don't.

This is, bar none, the best laptop I've bought in years. Right out of the box, it looks and feels like a million bucks. Here's my first impressions:

    * KEYBOARD: One of the nicest typing experiences I've had, especially considering how thin the unit is. The keys don't feel like you have to press too hard or too soft, and they sink in enough to make it feel like a regular keyboard -- which can be a problem with tiny laptops.
    * SCREEN: I don't know why I didn't buy a matte screen sooner. The viewing angles on this thing are crazy. There's no loss in brightness and color intensity either.
    * OS: I was prepared to hate Windows 10... and I found that I don't. It's strange; considering that I was dragged, kicking and screaming, from XP to 7.
    * CASE: While the inside feels more plastic than the outside, the shiny aluminium makes the unit look way more expensive than it actually is.
    * WEIGHT: I'm pretty freaked out by how thin and light this is. My last laptop in this class was pretty much a glorified tablet and weighed 0.8lbs more. You actually notice the difference. Before that, I had a netbook that was shaped like a brick and weighed about as much. Having a laptop that weighs a fraction of what any one of my casebooks does is a dream come true.
    * HARDWARE: Blazing fast. These 7th Gen i5s are amazing, considering how little power they use. I've been running three browsers, a couple of Office applications, and this absurd legal database that manages resources poorly. So far, it's going strong.
    * SOFTWARE: There's so little bloatware! I love Asus's commitment to not bogging down their products. It makes for such easy setup right out of the box.
    * CHARGER: This is the one thing I don't like. It's a brick-end charger, with a big plug. I prefer the ones that have the brick in the middle of the cord. Still, the advantage is that the cord itself is very thin, like the cord you'd see on a clock or other low power electronics. Neither a positive nor a negative, honestly.
    * BATTERY LIFE: I fully charged the thing and I've been making notes on some cases for the last two hours. So far, I'm down to 80%, and it says I have 10 hours left. I'm totally blown away, I've never had that sort of battery life in anything before. I don't think my cell phone lasts that long.

I'll check back in a month or so when I've put it through it's paces. But so far, it's very very impressive. I loved my old $250 netbook from Asus (lasted six years before the power source died), and I make a point to buy motherboards and GPUs from them. I've even got a 8-year-old refurb tower plugging away in my mother's house for her Facebook needs. I also have a Nexus tablet they made, which I've misused heavily for the past four years. Glad to see that Asus's quality controls are just as good today as they were all the other times I bought their products.

I'm not regretting this panicked purchase. Never buying second hand laptops again, I'll just go straight to Asus.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lightweight, Reliable, Smooth laptop
Reviewed in Canada on June 21, 2017

I bought this laptop in late November 2016 and have been using it steadily for post-degree studies since.
    Pros:
Excellent battery life. Barring games, handily gets six hours, and I've stretched it to over 9 hours with careful use of battery saver and power saver options. It could probably go further but I haven't pushed its battery limits that far yet.
Trackpad is excellent. It's near-Apple quality thanks to it being a Precision Pad by Microsoft, which means accurate finger gestures, accurate pointing, and the finger print reader which seemed a little gimmicky at first but I've come to rely on for quickly signing in to Windows with - it's just a touch, and you're logged in again. Gestures also make using multi-desktops easy (four-finger swipe).
Comfortable keyboard with three light settings. Decent amount of travel and remains comfortable for typing on for extended periods.
Screen has no complaints. Plenty of ports, smart card reader is a welcome plus, I haven't used the USB-C port yet but glad it's there.
Finish is good. Feels premium and light. This laptop is very portable.
    Minimal bloatware.

    Cons:
Most of the cons I would level at Microsoft and Windows 10 rather than the laptop itself. There is a small amount of flex in the keyboard but it isn't detrimental, it just makes the system feel a little less premium than a Macbook.
Fan noise in near-silent rooms can sometimes be a little annoying. Most of the time, this laptop is silent, or near silent, well, well below a whisper. For example right now I'm mostly idling at desktop with GPU and CPU at 42 Celsius, 8% cpu utilization, and the fan is engaged (on its lowest setting). Why? I think the fan should stay off until 50C or higher, but I guess Asus thinks otherwise. The breeze from the open window is louder than the fan, but take the laptop into a closed room and it's a little different - but again, step two feet away and you won't hear it. When playing games, the fan can definitely get a bit louder, but that's to be expected - the heat has to get vented somehow. And it's not as noisy as other laptops I've used.

    Other points:
Performance-wise, no complaints. While I haven't tested it out in particularly demanding games (FTL, Darkest Dungeon, Doom 1, Everquest, Risk of Rain), the only game in that list which pushed its limits was Risk of Rain (inexplicably), and performance was still fine, just the system was getting rather hot and noisy. Performance in Youtube, streamed movies, Netflix, and the like has been excellent. 8gb memory and 256gb SSD feels deluxe and I tend to hover around 4gb in use with a lot of applications in use, so there's plenty of room to grow. 64gb and 128gb flash drives come so cheaply these days and in such small form factors that it's quite easy to expand storage in the future.

If you're looking for something portable with good battery life and quality craftsmanship you could do a lot worse than this laptop. It will play plenty of light games, older titles, and the battery life for work-tasks is excellent. If you're looking to game more seriously, get something with a discrete GPU.

Have had it for a couple of days and so far very happy. Fast, looks good, feels good. Was looking for a good quality all in one laptop that was light and compact and very happy with this one. Had considered a Macbook Air but wanted to stick with windows. Things that I was pleasantly surprised by: trackpad is very multifunctional (not just left-click, rightclick and maybe scroll, but also pinch-zoom and multi-finger triggers - maybe all laptops are like this now but my last one sure wasn't), fingerprint recognition on the trackpad actually very handy, great battery life, fan is quiet (other reviews had said that it's loud but mine is not even audible - maybe it's louder at higher CPU usage?). Super minor things I haven't liked: keyboard look and feel isn't as comfy as my previous laptop, a number of keys require two touch (e.g. function + f11 to volume up or volume down) where I wish I could just tap it with one hand, laptop doesn't open as far as I want it to sometimes (no problem for normal stuff but couldn't tilt the screen back quite enough when I was lying down and watching Netflix). Overall super happy. Exactly what I wanted and no unpleasant surprises.
